Prophet Motive

Joshua Hamsa has been writing since he was fifteen and homeless in Spokane, Washington. He got good at it before he got anything else right. There was a decade in the middle he doesn't skip past. A felony charge at fourteen for what he'd written in a notebook. Three years on the street. A shelter, a GED, a run at college, and a local reputation as a rapper who could hold a room — then a divorce, a needle, and years spent as somebody else entirely, under names that weren't his, in three states that all eventually wanted him back. It ended in a Los Angeles jail cell in the fall of 2015, where a man he'd never met invited him to a Bible study. He hasn't touched a needle since. He also relapsed, checked himself into rehab, and started over — a detail he insists on keeping in, because leaving it out would make the story a lie. What got him writing again was a church life group; its leader, and two friends he met there, and his brother, and his wife all turn up in the credits of what came next. He's put out records before. Collections of old songs under an old name. A batch of battles. An album written in a prison cell in Idaho. Two EPs in 2020, made by a man who had just started believing anything. Prophet Motive is the first full-length he's made free, and the first record of his life released under his own name. Twelve tracks: six from those early years of belief, six written after — they begin as an indictment of the culture and end as a question aimed at the listener. It's been finished since 2021. He tried more than once to put it out. It never went. Now it does.
